Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1: Gather Your Supplies
I started my garden wall project by rounding up all the necessary materials: bricks, mortar mix, a trowel, a level, a tape measure, safety goggles, gloves, a wheelbarrow, a shovel, a compact drill, construction adhesive, landscape fabric, backfill soil, and some decorative plants. My garden is going to look amazing!
Step 2: Choose the Location
I wandered around my garden to find the perfect spot for my decorative wall. I wanted it to be a focal point, so I chose a sunny area that would highlight the plants I plan to adorn it with.
Step 3: Plan the Wall Design
I sketched a simple design for my wall, measuring how long and high I wanted it using my tape measure. It’s going to be a low wall that curves slightly, giving it a nice flow.
Step 4: Clear the Area
Armed with my shovel, I cleared away any grass and weeds from the site where I’ll build the wall. I made sure the ground was level; this is crucial for a stable wall. Plus, I felt like a landscape architect as I prepped the area!
Step 5: Lay the Foundation
I mixed the mortar according to the instructions and applied a layer on the ground where the first row of bricks will go. This will ensure my wall has a solid base. A little bit of sweat, but it was worth it!
Step 6: Start Stacking Bricks
With my trusty trowel and bricks in hand, I began laying the first row of bricks. I made sure to check with my level after each brick to keep everything nice and straight. This is where the wall started to take shape, and I couldn't help but feel giddy!
Step 7: Build Upward
As I finished the first row, I continued stacking more bricks, applying mortar in between each layer. I checked my level often because a crooked wall was not in my plans. Each layer added more height and personality.
Step 8: Secure the Bricks
Once I reached the desired height, I used construction adhesive on the top bricks for extra stability. I wanted my wall to last! I could already envision the beautiful plants climbing up it.
Step 9: Backfill and Support
After the wall was built, I used backfill soil to ensure it’s well-supported. I packed the soil carefully around the base of the wall, keeping it nice and sturdy. My hard work was paying off!
Step 10: Add Landscape Fabric
To avoid weeds popping up through the wall, I laid down landscape fabric along the back side where I'd place the soil. This will help maintain its beauty over time.
Step 11: Plant Decoration
The final touch! I planted some decorative plants and vines along the base and in front of the wall. I chose colorful flowers that will bloom beautifully and vines that will climb and drape over the brick. My garden wall is finally complete!
Step 12: Admire Your Work
I stepped back to admire my finished garden wall. I felt a sense of accomplishment and couldn't wait to see my plants grow and flourish against it. It’s not just a wall; it's a piece of my garden's story!
