Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1: Gathering My Equipment
First things first, I head to the shed to gather all my equipment. I pile up the fire pit stones, shovels, level, trowel, gloves, safety goggles, landscape fabric, sand, and my optional items like the steel fire ring and grate. I’m ready to get started!
Step 2: Choosing the Perfect Spot
Next, I stroll around the yard to find the perfect spot for my fire pit. It needs to be away from any overhanging branches and at a safe distance from my house. After much deliberation, I find a nice open area.
Step 3: Marking Out the Fire Pit
I grab a rope and some stakes to mark out a circle where my fire pit will go. I measure about 3 feet in diameter – perfect for a cozy gathering!
Step 4: Digging the Pit
With my trusty shovel, I start digging out the grass and soil inside the marked circle. I want to go about 6 inches deep to create a good base. It’s a bit of a workout, but I’m having fun!
Step 5: Leveling the Base
Once I’ve got my hole, I level out the bottom using the level tool. It’s crucial for a stable fire pit, and I’m excited to see it come together.
Step 6: Adding Sand for Stability
Now comes the sand! I pour a layer of sand into the bottom of the pit for drainage and to help level everything perfectly. I smooth it out using my rake.
Step 7: Laying Down Landscape Fabric
If you want to prevent weeds, now’s the time to lay down some landscape fabric. I cut it to fit and place it over the sand layer. It’ll help keep things tidy.
Step 8: Building the Stone Wall
Now for the fun part! I start stacking my fire pit stones around the edge of the pit. I make sure to stagger the joints as I go, checking for level as I build up the wall to about 12 inches high.
Step 9: Optional Steel Fire Ring
If I have one, it’s time to place my steel fire ring inside the stone wall I just created. It adds an extra layer of safety and helps contain the fire.
Step 10: Finishing Touches and Grate
I take a step back to admire my work. I may place a fire pit grate on top if I plan on cooking. Now, I’ve got a beautiful DIY fire pit ready for those cozy evenings!
Step 11: Safety Gear On!
Lastly, I put on my gloves and safety goggles. Safety is key when dealing with fire, and I want to make sure I’m protected while I enjoy my new fire pit!
