There's just something magical about winter that makes me crave the warmth of home, don't you think? As the snowflakes twirl outside my window, I can't help but feel nostalgic for cozy nights spent wrapped in blankets, sipping hot cocoa. The other day, while wandering through a little craft shop, the sweet scent of cinnamon and pine caught my attention, sparking an idea in me: what if I could create my very own comforting winter candle? Just imagine lighting it and letting the aroma fill the room—a blend of warmth that embraces you like a hug from an old friend. Have you ever felt so drawn to a project that your heart starts racing? Well, that's where I am right now, and I can't wait to dive into this little adventure!
Items You’ll Need

- Wicks
- Candle making pot (double boiler)
- Thermometer
- Fragrance oils (winter scents like cinnamon, pine, etc.)
- Color dye (optional)
- Pouring pitcher or container
- Candle containers (glass jars or metal tins)
- Stirring utensils (e.g. wooden sticks or spoons)
- Safety equipment (gloves, goggles)
Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1: Gather My Supplies
First things first, I gather all my supplies on the kitchen counter. I have my soy wax ready, some cozy winter fragrance oils like cinnamon and pine, wicks, a pouring pitcher, and all the necessary safety gear. It’s exciting to see all the materials I’ll be working with!
Step 2: Prepare My Double Boiler
I set up my double boiler by placing a pot filled with water on the stove and putting my candle-making pot on top. I turn on the heat to start warming up the water. This method will help melt the wax evenly and safely.
Step 3: Measure and Melt the Wax
While waiting for the water to boil, I measure out the amount of soy wax I need for my candle containers. I pour it into the candle pot. I then check the temperature with my thermometer while the wax melts. I want to heat it to about 170°F for optimal melting.
Step 4: Add Color (Optional)
Once the wax is completely melted, I have the option of adding color to my candle. If I want a cozy deep red or forest green, I would sprinkle in some dye chips and stir gently until it’s evenly distributed. This step makes my candle feel extra festive!
Step 5: Incorporate Fragrance Oils
As soon as the wax reaches around 170°F, I remove it from heat and pour in my lovely winter fragrance oils. I use about 1 ounce of fragrance per pound of wax. The warm, sweet scent of cinnamon and the fresh aroma of pine immediately fill the air. I stir it thoroughly to ensure the fragrance mixes in well.
Step 6: Prepare the Candle Containers
While the wax cools slightly, I prepare my candle containers. I decide to use beautiful glass jars for my candles. I attach the wick to the bottom of each jar using a bit of melted wax or a wick sticker, making sure it stands straight up.
Step 7: Pour the Wax
Once the temperature of the wax drops to about 150°F, I carefully pour the scented wax into the prepared containers. I do this slowly to avoid making any bubbles. I fill them up, leaving some space at the top for any overflow when the wax solidifies!
Step 8: Secure the Wicks
To keep the wicks centered while the wax hardens, I use a wooden stick and lay it across the top of the jars. I can poke the wick through a hole I've made in the stick, ensuring it stays perfectly in the middle. This little detail ensures my candle will burn evenly!
Step 9: Let It Cool
Now, I set my candles aside and let them cool completely. This takes a few hours, and during this time, I can’t help but feel excited about how they’ll turn out. The scents wafting through the room are so comforting!
Step 10: Trim the Wicks
Once the candles have cooled and hardened, I carefully trim the wicks to about 1/4 inch above the surface. This is important for a clean burn. I admire my hard work at this stage; the candles look beautiful!
Step 11: Package and Enjoy
Finally, I package up my winter-themed candles, maybe adding some ribbons or festive labels if I'm feeling creative. I can’t wait to light one of these cozy candles during winter nights, bringing warmth and comfort into my home!
