You know that feeling when you step into your bathroom and see a beautiful, handcrafted soap dish? It’s like a little piece of art, just waiting to hold your favorite bar of soap! I’ve always wanted one, but somehow, all the ones in the store look so generic. Why not make it myself? Just the thought of crafting something unique makes my heart race with excitement. I remember when I was a kid, I used to love making little projects with whatever I could find around the house – it was so freeing! So, why shouldn’t I channel that creativity into a soap dish? Plus, who doesn’t love a good excuse to get a little messy with some clay and colors? Let’s dive into this little DIY adventure together!

- Drill with drill bits
- Varnish or wood finish
- Clamps
- Ruler or measuring tape
- Pencil for marking measurements

Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1: Gathered My Supplies
First things first, I rounded up all my equipment: a sturdy wooden block, my trusty saw, chisel set, various grits of sandpaper, drill with bits, some varnish to finish it off, clamps, a ruler, a pencil for marking, and of course, my safety goggles!
Step 2: Measured Twice, Cut Once
I measured out the desired size for my soap dish on the wooden block. I wanted it to be about 6 inches long and 4 inches wide so it fits perfectly by my sink. With my ruler and pencil, I marked the measurements clearly on the wood.
Step 3: Time to Saw!
With my measurements marked, I put on my safety goggles (safety first!) and grabbed my hand saw. I carefully cut along the lines I marked, making sure to keep my cuts straight and steady. It's thrilling to see the piece take shape!
Step 4: Chisel for Detail
Next, I took my chisel set and started carving out a shallow groove in the middle of the block. This groove will help the water drain from the soap. I worked slowly, chipping away little by little to make the groove just right.
Step 5: Sanding Time!
Now that the basic shape is cut out, it's time to smooth it all out. I grabbed my sandpaper of varying grits and started sanding the edges and surfaces. I started with a coarser grit and moved to finer ones, making sure there were no splinters left. My soap dish was becoming lovely and smooth!
Step 6: Drill Some Drainage Holes
To enhance water drainage, I decided to drill a few small holes in the bottom of the soap dish. I marked where to drill and used the drill carefully, making sure the holes are evenly spaced. It’s exciting to see the functionality come together!
Step 7: Securing the Work
With my dish complete, I wanted to ensure it held together well. So, I used my clamps to hold the entire piece while I prepared to finish it. This helps keep it in place and ensure every inch is treated.
Step 8: Finishing Touches
The final step was to apply some varnish to protect my beautiful wooden soap dish. I used a brush to spread an even coat over the entire surface, ensuring to get into all those delightful grooves. The varnish made it shine!
Step 9: Let it Dry
I set the soap dish aside to dry completely. The anticipation of using it was thrilling. Once dried, it looked even better than I imagined!
Step 10: Enjoy My Creation
Finally, I placed my new soap dish next to the sink, and filled it with my favorite soap bar! It felt so rewarding to see my hard work turn into something functional and beautiful.
