Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1: Prepare My Workspace
First, I need to set up my workspace. I lay down some newspaper on the table to catch any spills. It’s going to be a colorful mess, and I want to protect my table. I make sure to have all my equipment within reach!
Step 2: Gather the Old Wax
Next, I dig through my collection of old candles and wax remnants. It feels like a treasure hunt! I pull out those colorful bits - the more diverse the colors, the better my new candles will be.
Step 3: Melt the Wax
I place my double boiler on the stove, filled with water, and put it on medium heat. I chop the old candles into small pieces and put them into the top part of the double boiler. I watch them slowly melt, stirring occasionally with my stirring utensil. It’s so satisfying to see them transform!
Step 4: Add Color and Fragrance
As the wax melts, I choose my color dyes and fragrance oils. I carefully add a few drops of color dye to the melted wax and stir it in. The wax changes color right before my eyes! Then, I add a splash of fragrance oil for that delicious scent - I can’t wait to see how it turns out!
Step 5: Prepare the Wicks
While the wax is melting, I get my wicks ready. I take my wicks and secure them to the bottom of my molds using a bit of wax. This ensures they stand upright when I pour in the wax. I also use wick holders to keep them in place.
Step 6: Check the Temperature
I keep an eye on the thermometer, making sure the wax is melted to about 180 degrees Fahrenheit. It’s important to hit the right temperature before pouring - too cool, and it won’t pour well; too hot, and it will burn.
Step 7: Pour the Wax
Once my wax is melted and at the right temperature, I carefully pour it into the molds. The colors swirl and blend as I pour, creating a beautiful effect. I try not to rush; this is the fun part! I fill each mold just to the top.
Step 8: Let it Cool
After pouring, I sit back and wait for the wax to cool and harden. I tidy up my workspace a little while glancing at my molds, excited to see how they turn out. I can already smell the lovely fragrances filling the air!
Step 9: Remove the Candles
Once the candles are fully cooled and hardened, I carefully take them out of the molds. The moment of truth! I can’t wait to see how colorful they are. I gently pull on the wick and the candle slides out perfectly.
Step 10: Trim the Wicks
I take my scissors and trim the wicks to about a quarter inch above the candle surface. This will ensure they burn nicely when I light them. I admire my handiwork - they look amazing!
Step 11: Enjoy My Creations
Finally, I take a moment to enjoy my colorful candles. I light one and watch the beautiful colors glow. There’s nothing quite like the joy of crafting something unique and wonderful out of recycled materials!
