Have you ever found yourself drowning in a sea of fabric scraps, just staring at them like they’re some kind of puzzle waiting to be solved? That's me, surrounded by all these little bits and pieces of fabric that I just couldn’t bring myself to throw away. It’s like a part of me knows there’s something beautiful hiding underneath, but what? I mean, isn't it time to finally make something crafty and useful out of this mess? I can vividly remember the first time I made a fabric quilt; I felt so accomplished, so proud! So why not start with simple fabric scrap coasters? They’re practical, colorful, and let’s face it, who couldn’t use a cute coaster or two? Plus, I love the idea of taking a little piece of my creative journey and turning it into something that brightens up my coffee table. Sounds fun, right?
Items You’ll Need

- Sewing machine

- Fabric glue (optional)
- Iron and ironing board
- Ruler or measuring tape
- Pins (for holding fabric pieces together)
- Rotary cutter and mat (optional)
- Coaster template (can be handmade)
Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1: Gather Your Materials
First things first, I gather my equipment. I spread out my fabric scraps on the table, and I can already feel my creative juices flowing! I’m also bringing in my scissors, sewing machine, needle and thread, and an iron with an ironing board. Don’t forget the pins and ruler!
Step 2: Choose My Coaster Size
Using my ruler, I decide on the size of my coasters. I think a nice 4x4 inch square will do. I grab a piece of cardboard and quickly cut it into a coaster template so I can keep my sizes consistent!
Step 3: Cut My Fabric Pieces
Now comes the fun part! I take my template and lay it on my fabric scraps. With my scissors, I carefully cut out several square pieces from different fabrics. I love mixing colors and patterns to create a unique look for each coaster.
Step 4: Iron the Fabric
I plug in my iron and get it nice and hot! I take each piece of fabric and give it a good press. This step is super satisfying as it removes wrinkles and helps the fabric lay flat.
Step 5: Pin the Pieces Together
With my cut and ironed fabric squares ready, I stack two squares together (right sides facing). I use my pins to hold them in place. This way, they won't move while I sew them!
Step 6: Sew the Coasters
I take the pinned squares over to my sewing machine. After threading the machine with matching thread, I sew around the edges, leaving a small opening for turning them inside out. I can't wait to see how they turn out!
Step 7: Turn the Coasters Inside Out
Once sewn, I carefully remove the pins and use a chopstick (or my fingers) to poke out the corners and turn the squares inside out. It’s always an excited moment for me to see how the colors pop once flipped!
Step 8: Press and Finish
I give each coaster another good iron to make it crisp and flat. If I want, I can sew a top stitch around the edge for added flair. Plus, it helps them hold up better over time!
Step 9: Optional Fabric Glue
If I'm feeling creative, I might use some fabric glue to add embellishments like buttons or patches. This can be a fun way to personalize my coasters even more!
Step 10: Show Off My Coasters
And voila! My fabric scrap coasters are complete! I can’t wait to show them off or even use them at my next gathering. Each one is unique and filled with my personal style.
