Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1: Gathering My Supplies
I start by laying out all my equipment: the soap mold, mixing bowls, stick blender, scale, safety goggles, gloves, thermometer, lye, natural oils, essential oils, colorants, spatula, cutter, and some pretty paper for packaging. It feels like I'm about to embark on a creative adventure!
Step 2: Safety First!
Before I begin, I put on my safety goggles and gloves. This lye can be caustic, and I want to make sure I'm safe while making my fabulous soap!
Step 3: Measuring Lye and Water
With my scale ready, I carefully measure the lye and set it aside. Then, I measure the water in another mixing bowl. I love watching the numbers change on the scale as I pour.
Step 4: Mixing Lye and Water
Next, I slowly add the lye to the water (never the other way around!) while stirring with a spatula. The lye dissolves almost instantly and the mixture heats up. I can feel the excitement as the reaction happens!
Step 5: Cooling Down
I set the lye mixture aside to cool down while I measure out my natural oils. It’s nice to take a moment and admire the oils - the olive oil is so smooth and rich!
Step 6: Measuring Natural Oils
I place the oil bowl on my scale and measure out the oils I want to use. I go for olive oil, coconut oil, and a bit of palm oil for that hardness. The blending of these oils gets me thinking about the delicious soaps I’m about to create!
Step 7: Combining Lye and Oils
Once my lye mixture has cooled to around 100°F, I slowly add it to the bowl with my oils. I grab my stick blender and pulse it gently at first, then I blend away until it reaches a light trace. The mixture looks creamy and luscious!
Step 8: Adding Fragrance and Color
Now comes the fun part! I add my chosen essential oils for fragrance – lavender for a calming scent – and I mix in some natural colorants to make the soap visually stunning. It’s like a work of art in the making!
Step 9: Pouring into Molds
With everything mixed perfectly, I pour the soap batter into my molds. I love to see the colors swirl and blend as I pour. I can hardly wait for it to set!
Step 10: Setting Time
I cover the molds with a towel to help insulate and let the soap cure. Patience is key now as I wait for 24 hours, imagining the beautiful bars I’ll soon be gifting!
Step 11: Unmolding
After a full day, I finally get to unmold the soap! I carefully pop them out of the molds, and they look amazing – perfect for gifts!
Step 12: Cutting the Bars
Next, I take my cutter and slice the big loaves into individual bars. Each cut reveals the wonderful swirls of color and fragrance inside. This is so satisfying!
Step 13: Packaging Up for Gifts
Finally, I wrap each bar in lovely paper. I add a nice label and maybe a little twine to finish it off. My natural soap bars are ready for gifting, and I can’t wait to share them with my friends!
