As I sit here sipping on my pumpkin spice latte, I can't help but feel that the holiday season is just around the corner. Isn’t there something magical about stringing together twinkling lights and colorful ornaments? I mean, who doesn’t love that cozy feeling when you walk into a room filled with holiday cheer? Last year, I bought a pre-made garland and although it was pretty, it didn’t quite capture the memories I wanted to celebrate. So, this year, I’m determined to create my own DIY holiday garland! Maybe I'll add some cinnamon sticks and dried oranges to it – doesn’t that sound festive? And, honestly, what’s more satisfying than making something with your own hands that reflects your unique holiday spirit?
Items You’ll Need

- Twine or String
- Scissors
- Wire Cutters
- Hot Glue Gun and Glue Sticks
- Decorative Ornaments (e.g., baubles, stars)
- Ribbon
- LED Fairy Lights
- Inspiration and Ideas (e.g., DIY tutorials)
Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1: Gather Your Materials
First, I gather all my materials! I have some lovely greenery like pine branches and eucalyptus, my twine for tying everything together, scissors to cut things, wire cutters for any heavy-duty cutting, and my hot glue gun with glue sticks ready to go. I also have a bunch of decorative ornaments like glittery baubles and shiny stars, a beautiful ribbon, and some twinkling LED fairy lights to make it sparkle.
Step 2: Create the Garland Base
I start by laying out the base of my garland. I take a long piece of twine and start attaching the greenery. Using the wire cutters, I trim the branches to the lengths I want, usually around 6 to 12 inches, and then I layer them onto the twine, twisting and wrapping to secure each piece.
Step 3: Add in Decorative Elements
Once I have a nice base of greenery, I start adding embellishments! I carefully place my decorative ornaments among the greenery, securing them with my hot glue gun. I make sure to mix different sizes and colors to create depth. I also tuck in some ribbon and a few stars to keep it visually interesting.
Step 4: Incorporate LED Fairy Lights
Now comes the fun part! I wrap my LED fairy lights around the garland. I take my time to weave them in and out of the greenery, ensuring even coverage. I love how these lights twinkle and bring the whole garland to life!
Step 5: Final Touches and Hanging
After I’m satisfied with how it looks, I step back and maybe add a few more ornaments or ribbon where it feels sparse. To hang it, I simply tie off the ends of the twine and find the perfect spot in my home where it can shine. I step back to admire my work, and I can’t wait to show it off during the holiday season!
