You know that feeling when you’re sitting outside on a sunny day, sipping your coffee, and all you hear is the sweet sound of birds chirping? It just fills me with joy! Lately, I’ve been toying with this idea of creating my very own flower pot bird feeder. Can you imagine how lovely it would be to see those little feathered friends flitting about, enjoying their snack while I soak in the sunshine? It’s funny, too, because I remember my grandma having one in her garden, and how mesmerized I was watching the birds come and go. It’s like, who wouldn’t want to bring a bit of that magic into their own space? What if I can create something beautiful that also feeds the birds? Sounds like a win-win, right?
Items You’ll Need
- Clay flower pot
- Clay saucer (for the bottom of the pot)
- Wooden dowel or stick (for perch)
- Bird seed (such as sunflower seeds or mixed seeds)
- Strong craft glue or a hot glue gun with glue sticks
- Outdoor varnish or sealant (optional for protection)
- Drill with small drill bit (for making holes in the pot)
- Twine or wire (for hanging the feeder)
Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1: Gather My Materials
I start by gathering all the supplies I need for this fun bird feeder project. I've got my clay flower pot, clay saucer, a wooden dowel for the perch, some bird seed, craft glue, outdoor varnish, a drill, and some twine for hanging. Let's get my creativity flowing!
Step 2: Drill a Hole for the Perch
With my drill and a small drill bit, I carefully drill a hole about 2 inches from the bottom of the flower pot. This will be where the wooden dowel goes through, creating a perfect perch for my feathered friends!
Step 3: Insert the Wooden Dowel
I take my wooden dowel and slide it through the hole I just drilled. It should stick out on both sides of the pot, forming a little perch. It’s already looking more inviting!
Step 4: Attach the Saucer
Next, I grab my clay saucer and apply a generous amount of strong craft glue to the top edge of the flower pot. Then, I carefully press the saucer onto the top of the pot, ensuring it sticks well. This will be the base for holding the birdseed!
Step 5: Add Bird Seed
Now comes the fun part – it’s time to fill the clay saucer with bird seed! I choose a mix of sunflower seeds and other seeds to attract a variety of birds. I can already imagine the little birds enjoying their feast!
Step 6: Seal It Up
If I want to protect my feeder from the outdoor elements, I decide to apply a coat of outdoor varnish or sealant. I do this in a well-ventilated area and let it dry completely, ensuring my feeder lasts through the seasons.
Step 7: Prepare It for Hanging
Finally, I use some twine or wire to create a loop for hanging. I tie the twine securely around the top of the flower pot so that it can be easily hung from a tree branch or a hook in my yard.
Step 8: Hang My Creation
Excitedly, I step outside with my new bird feeder in hand! I find the perfect branch in my garden, and with a little tug, I hang it up. I can't wait to see the birds come and enjoy the seeds I've provided!
Step 9: Enjoy Watching the Birds
Now, I sit back and relax, waiting for the birds to discover my feeder. I grab a cozy blanket and my binoculars, so I can have a great view of all the different birds that will visit. What a delightful way to connect with nature!
