Have you ever looked around your house and thought, "What on earth can I make with all this junk?" I mean, isn’t it a little crazy how many everyday items we just toss aside? Last week, I was fiddling with some old jars, a rubber band, and an empty cereal box, all while humming a tune that just wouldn’t leave my head. It got me thinking: why not turn these random things into a musical instrument? Imagine the joy of creating something beautiful from the clutter of our lives! What if that cereal box could strum out a melody, or that rubber band could resonate with the rhythm of our hearts? I can practically hear the melodies already!
Items You’ll Need

- Rubber Bands
- Tupperware or Plastic Containers
- Paper Plates
- Wooden Spoons
- Cans (Empty)
- Hangers
- Old Electronics
- Balloons
- Straws
- Tin Foil
- Plastic Bottles
Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1: Gather Materials
First, I rummaged through my house to collect all the items I could find. I gathered glass bottles, rubber bands, tupperware, paper plates, wooden spoons, empty cans, hangers, old electronics, balloons, straws, tin foil, and plastic bottles. This was the most fun part because I felt like a treasure hunter!
Step 2: Create Bottle Drums
I decided to use the empty glass bottles to make drums. I filled some with different amounts of water to create different pitches. I tapped them gently with the wooden spoons, and wow, the sounds were amazing! It was like my own mini xylophone.
Step 3: Make a Rubber Band Guitar
Next, I took a tupperware container and stretched several rubber bands over the top. When I plucked them with my fingers, they created twangy sounds! I could change the pitch by moving the rubber bands closer or further apart. This was the start of my funky guitar.
Step 4: Construct Shakers with Cans
I had some empty cans that I filled with rice and sealed tightly with tin foil. Shaking them produced a lovely rattling sound. It felt like I was creating my own percussion section!
Step 5: Create a Balloon Didgeridoo
I grabbed a long straw and cut it down to size. Then I took a balloon, stretched the end over the straw, and voila! I now had a didgeridoo. When I blew through it, I could get some really cool deep sounds.
Step 6: Make a Plate Cymbal
Using the paper plates, I created a simple cymbal. I attached two plates together with some tape, and when I struck them together, they made a nice crashing noise. I felt like a drummer in a band!
Step 7: Hang the Hanger Harp
I took a clothes hanger and stretched more rubber bands around it. I plucked these to create harp-like sounds. This was definitely one of the most unique instruments I made!
Step 8: Experiment with Electronic Sounds
For a modern twist, I found some old electronics - a broken keyboard and a small battery-operated speaker. I tinkered around, pressing keys and creating electronic beats that added a fresh touch to my instrumental masterpiece.
Step 9: Perform with My New Instrument
Finally, I combined all my creations. I set a rhythm with the bottle drums, played some melodies on the rubber band guitar, added shaker sounds, and blew on my balloon didgeridoo. I felt like a one-man band, and the music was totally eclectic and fun!
Step 10: Invite Friends to Join
I invited some friends over to showcase my new musical instruments. Together, we experimented with sounds, rhythms, and even made a little jam session. It was an unforgettable experience of creativity and fun!
