Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1: Prepare Your Workspace
First, I clear my table and gather all my equipment. Having everything in one place makes the process so much easier and more exciting!
Step 2: Choose Your Wax
I opt for soy wax today for its eco-friendliness and excellent scent throw. I weigh out the amount I need for my jar using the scale - typically, I use about two times the volume of the jar for a good fill.
Step 3: Melt the Wax
I set up my double boiler and add my wax to the top pot. As it melts, I watch the transformation and wait for it to reach about 180°F, checking with my thermometer.
Step 4: Add Fragrance and Dye
Once the wax is melted, I remove it from the heat. Now comes the fun part – I add my fragrant essential oils! I usually add around 1 ounce of fragrance per pound of wax. If I'm feeling adventurous, I might add some dye for color at this point as well!
Step 5: Prepare the Wicks
While the wax cools a bit, I prepare my wicks - I dip the metal base into hot glue and stick it to the bottom of my jar. This keeps the wick in place when I pour the wax.
Step 6: Pour the Wax
When the wax temperature is around 140°F, I gently pour it into the jars, leaving about half an inch of space at the top. I try to pour slowly and steadily to avoid air bubbles!
Step 7: Secure the Wicks
To keep the wick centered, I use a pencil or a wick holder across the top of the jar, attaching the wick to it so it doesn't move while the wax hardens.
Step 8: Let the Candles Cool
Now, I just sit back and let the candles cool. This usually takes a couple of hours, so I clean up my workspace and admire the beautiful colors in the melted wax.
Step 9: Trim the Wicks
Once the candles are completely solid, I carefully remove the wick holder and trim the wick to about 1/4 inch above the candle surface. This ensures a great burn!
Step 10: Label and Package (Optional)
If I'm feeling creative, I design some cute labels and stick them on the jars. Then, I prepare them for gifting by wrapping them up with pretty ribbons!
Step 11: Light Your Candles
Finally, I get to enjoy my creation! I light one of the candles, sit back, and soak in the delightful fragrance as it fills the room. It’s such a rewarding experience!
