Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1: Choosing the Location
I start by finding the perfect sunny spot in my yard for my herb garden. Herbs love sunlight, so I want a location that gets at least 6-8 hours of sunlight each day.
Step 2: Planning the Layout
Using my gardening book for inspiration, I sketch a layout for my herb garden. I decide to include a mix of perennial and annual herbs like basil, rosemary, and parsley. I want to arrange them based on their height and spread.
Step 3: Gathering My Equipment
Next, I gather all my equipment: garden trowel, pruning shears, watering can, garden gloves, plant labels, raised garden bed kit, and everything else I need. It feels good to be organized!
Step 4: Preparing the Raised Bed
I assemble my raised garden bed kit. It’s fun to put it together, and soon I have my frame ready. I place it in the sunny spot I've chosen.
Step 5: Choosing and Testing the Soil
I use my soil test kit to check the nutrient levels of the soil. It’s important to know what my soil needs. After testing, I might need to add some compost to improve it.
Step 6: Filling the Raised Bed
With my garden fork and rake, I mix the soil with compost in my raised bed. I want to ensure it’s well-aerated and ready for planting.
Step 7: Planting the Herbs
Using my seed starting tray for some seeds and planter pots for others, I plant my chosen herb seeds as per the instructions in my gardening book. I label each pot and spaced them nicely in the raised bed.
Step 8: Watering the Herbs
After planting, I give my herbs a good drink with my watering can. I’ll be sure not to overwater, as I have a drainage system in the raised bed.
Step 9: Mulching
To keep my herbs healthy and retain moisture, I spread a layer of mulch over the soil. It looks good too!
Step 10: Monitoring and Caring
Daily, I check on my herbs wearing my garden gloves for any pests or weeds. I’ve also got my pruning shears to trim any dead leaves that I may find.
Step 11: Harvesting
As my herbs grow, I can’t wait to start harvesting. I will use my pruning shears and enjoy fresh herbs for cooking.
Step 12: Maintaining the Garden
Throughout the season, I regularly feed my herbs with organic fertilizer using the fertilizer spreader, keep the beds moist with my garden hose, and ensure they’re well cared for.
Step 13: Enjoying the Garden
Finally, I take time to relax in my garden, wearing my sun protection hat and sitting on my garden kneeler and seat, enjoying the fruits of my labor and the beauty of my unique herb garden.
