Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1: Gather Your Equipment
First things first, I gather all my equipment: soy wax, essential oils, candle wicks, containers, a double boiler, thermometer, stirring utensil, scale, and herbs like lavender or rosemary. I also have protective gloves, some newspaper to protect my workspace, and labeling supplies ready.
Step 2: Set Up Your Workstation
I spread out some newspaper on my table to keep everything tidy. Then I set up my double boiler: a pot filled with water on the stove with a heatproof bowl on top for melting the wax.
Step 3: Measure the Wax
Using my scale, I measure out the soy wax. I usually go with about 1 pound of wax, which is enough for a couple of medium-sized candles. It's important to be precise here!
Step 4: Melt the Wax
I turn on the stove to medium heat and let the wax melt gently in the double boiler. I keep a close eye on it, stirring occasionally with my stirring utensil until it's completely melted.
Step 5: Prepare the Herbs
While the wax is melting, I finely chop some herbs. For this candle, I'm using dried lavender. I make sure to mix about 1 tablespoon of herbs to give my candle that lovely herbal aroma.
Step 6: Mix in Essential Oils
Once my wax has melted and reached about 180°F, I take it off the heat. Now it's time to add essential oils! I add about 1 ounce of lavender essential oil to the wax, giving it a good stir to ensure everything is combined well.
Step 7: Add the Herbs
Next, I gently fold in the chopped lavender herbs into the melted wax. This will give my candle that beautiful natural look and enhance the scent when it's burning.
Step 8: Prepare the Containers
I take my candle containers and secure the candle wicks to the bottom of each container. I use some melted wax to hold the wick in place as it will keep it standing upright when I pour in the wax.
Step 9: Pour the Wax
Carefully, I pour the melted wax mixture into the containers. I make sure to leave a little space at the top. I do this slowly to avoid creating bubbles and ensure the herbs are evenly distributed.
Step 10: Cool and Set
I let the candles cool at room temperature for several hours. I can’t wait to see how they turn out! I might even sit back with a good book while I wait.
Step 11: Trim the Wicks
Once the candles have completely set and hardened, I trim the wicks to about 1/4 inch above the wax surface. This is important for a proper burn.
Step 12: Label the Candles
Finally, I use my labeling supplies to create cute labels for my candles. I write 'Lavender Soy Candle' on them and stick them onto each container. They are now ready for gifting or personal use!
Step 13: Enjoy Your Creation
Time to light one of my beautiful herb-infused candles! The aroma fills the room, and I can't help but feel proud of my homemade creation.
