Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1: Gather Your Gear
First things first, I need to make sure I have all my equipment ready. I've got my soy wax, candle wicks, essential oils, double boiler, pouring pitcher, thermometer, molds, stirring utensil, scale, safety gear, heat-resistant surface, and a drop cloth to keep things tidy. Let’s make this fun!
Step 2: Measure the Wax
I'm going to weigh out my soy wax using the scale. For a standard size candle, I usually use about 8 ounces of wax. It’s always amazing to see how much wax melts down!
Step 3: Melt the Wax
Time to melt the wax! I fill the bottom part of the double boiler with water and bring it to a gentle simmer. Then, I pour the measured wax into the top part and patiently wait while it melts. The smell of the wax slowly warming up is so satisfying.
Step 4: Prep the Wicks
While the wax is melting, I’ll prepare my wicks. I dip them in the melted wax briefly to help them stick to the bottom of my candle mold or container. This is a fun little trick that makes sure they stay put when I pour the wax!
Step 5: Add Fragrance
Once the wax is fully melted (and has reached about 180°F according to my thermometer), it’s time to add the essential oils. I usually add about 1 ounce for every 8 ounces of wax. The aroma fills the room and I can’t help but smile!
Step 6: Pour the Wax
Now comes the exciting part! I carefully pour the melted wax into my prepared molds or containers, making sure to keep the wick centered. It's like pouring liquid magic!
Step 7: Let it Cool
After pouring, I allow my candles to cool completely. I can see the wax starting to solidify, and it looks so beautiful. While I wait, I clean up my workspace a bit, making sure my heat-resistant surface is free of any spills.
Step 8: Trim the Wicks
Once the candles are fully cooled, I trim the wicks to about 1/4 inch above the surface of the wax. This will make sure they burn nicely when I’m ready to light them.
Step 9: Cure and Enjoy
For the best fragrance, I let my candles cure for a few days before lighting them. But I can’t help it; I take a moment to enjoy the delightful sight of my beautiful, handmade candles before I eventually light one up!
