Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1: Gather Your Equipment
First things first! Let's grab all our equipment from the list: the double boiler, scale, mixing bowls, spatula, containers, syringe, labels, thermometer, pH strips, stirring rod, funnel, apron, and gloves. Having everything at hand makes the process so much smoother and more enjoyable!
Step 2: Prepare the Double Boiler
Now, let's fill the bottom pot of our double boiler with water and set it to simmer on low heat. If you don't have a double boiler, a heat-safe bowl over a pot of simmering water works just as well. We're going to melt our base oils!
Step 3: Measure and Melt the Oils
Using my handy scale, I'm going to measure out my oils. Typically, I'll use a mix of shea butter, coconut oil, and sweet almond oil. Once measured, I place them in the top part of the double boiler and let them melt away, stirring occasionally with my spatula.
Step 4: Water Phase - Get Ready!
While the oils are melting, I've decided to prepare the water phase. I'll measure out distilled water in another mixing bowl. At this point, I can also add some aloe vera gel if I want extra hydration!
Step 5: Combine the Phases
Once my oils are fully melted, I take the bowl off the heat. It's time to combine! I carefully pour my water phase into the bowl with the oils. This is where the magic happens! Start giving it a good mix with my whisk or spatula until it emulsifies.
Step 6: Cool It Down
As it cools, I use my thermometer to check the temperature. I want it to be around 45-50 degrees Celsius. This step is important for adding in the sensitive ingredients like essential oils, which I'll add once it's cooled down a bit!
Step 7: Add Essential Oils
Now the fun part! I get to choose my essential oils. Today, I’m feeling like a lavender and chamomile blend. I carefully measure them with my syringe to get the perfect amount. A few drops go in, and I fold them in gently.
Step 8: Check the pH
If I'm being meticulous, I’m going to check the pH of my lotion using the pH strips. Ideally, I want it around 5.0 to 6.0. If it’s a bit high, I might add a tiny bit of citric acid!
Step 9: Fill the Containers
With everything mixed and perfect, it’s time to fill my containers! I place a funnel into my jars and carefully pour my lotion in using the spatula to get every last drop. If I spill a bit, no biggie—it just adds to the excitement!
Step 10: Label and Admire
Finally, I get to label my jars! I use cute labels to write ‘Lavender Dream Lotion’ on them. Now, I take a moment to admire my handiwork. It looks fabulous and smells divine!
Step 11: Clean Up
All done! Time to clean up my workspace. I remove my apron and gloves, wash my tools, and enjoy the satisfaction of having made my own natural body lotion!
