Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1: Gather Your Equipment
First things first, I gather my equipment: my soap mold, stick blender, digital scale, mixing bowls, spatula, thermometer, and of course, my lye and oils. Safety gear is a must, so I don my gloves and goggles.
Step 2: Measure the Ingredients
With my digital scale, I measure out the oils and fats I’ll be using. Today, I’ve got olive oil and coconut oil. I love the mix they create!
Step 3: Mix the Lye Solution
Time to mix my lye! I carefully measure my lye using the scale, then slowly add it to a predetermined amount of water in a well-ventilated area. A gentle swirl is all it takes until the lye dissolves. Safety goggles on! This stuff is serious.
Step 4: Heat the Oils
While my lye solution cools, I heat my oils in another mixing bowl. The coconut oil needs to melt completely, and I just love the way these oils smell as they warm up.
Step 5: Combine Lye and Oils
Once both my lye and oils are at about the same temperature (around 100°F), I carefully pour the lye into the oils. Safety first, friends! I blend with my stick blender until I reach trace. It’s like a dance, watching the mixture swirl and thicken!
Step 6: Add Fragrance and Color
Now comes the fun part! I add essential oils for fragrance and stir in a vibrant colorant. I always choose a lovely lavender scent for a calming touch.
Step 7: Pour into Mold
I carefully pour the mixture into my soap mold, making sure every last drop gets in there. Then I tap the mold to release any air bubbles. This is where it starts to look like actual soap!
Step 8: Insulate and Let it Set
Next, I cover the mold with plastic wrap or parchment paper and wrap it in a towel to insulate it. This keeps the heat in as the saponification process occurs. I always feel excited at this stage!
Step 9: Unmold the Soap
After 24 to 48 hours, it’s time to unveil my masterpiece! I carefully remove the soap from the mold, and it looks gorgeous already!
Step 10: Cut the Soap Bars
With my trusty soap cutter, I slice the soap into beautiful bars. Each cut reveals the vibrant colors inside, and I can’t help but admire them!
Step 11: Cure the Soap
Now, I need to cure the soap bars for about 4 to 6 weeks. They need to dry and harden properly. I stack them in a cool, dry place, and wait patiently. Good things come to those who wait!
Step 12: Enjoy Your Artisan Soap
Once the curing is done, it’s time to enjoy my handmade soap bars. I can’t wait to gift some to my friends and family or keep them to use myself. It feels amazing to create something beautiful and practical!
