Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1: Preparation is Key!
First things first, I gather all my equipment together. I lay out my soap molds, mixing bowls, stick blender, measuring cups, thermometer, and of course, my safety gear. Safety goggles on, gloves ready - let's keep it safe and fun!
Step 2: Measure the Oils and Butters
Next, I grab my measuring cups and start measuring out the oils and butters I want to use. I’m going for a lovely blend of coconut oil, olive oil, and shea butter. It smells incredible already!
Step 3: Mixing the Lye Solution
Now, the exciting part! I carefully measure out the lye and add it to water to create my lye solution. I make sure to do this in a well-ventilated area, and I watch the temperature rise as it dissolves. It’s like a little science experiment!
Step 4: Combining Oils and Lye
Once my lye solution is cooled down, I pour it into my oils that I’ve also heated to about the same temperature. Time to blend! I use my stick blender to mix them until they reach 'trace'. It's magical how they come together into a creamy texture!
Step 5: Adding Fragrance and Color
Now for the fun part - adding fragrance oils and colorants! I decide to use lavender essential oil and a lovely purple swirl. I stir them in gently with my spatula. The aroma fills the room and I can’t help but smile.
Step 6: Pouring into Molds
I carefully pour the soap mixture into my molds. I make sure to tap them a bit to remove any air bubbles. As I pour, I visualize the beautiful final product coming to life.
Step 7: Insulation
After pouring, I cover the molds with parchment paper and wrap them with a towel to keep the heat in. It helps with the saponification process. I can't wait to see the results!
Step 8: Wait Patiently
Now, it’s time to wait! I check the temperature of the molds and make sure they’re safe. I have to be patient for 24-48 hours while the soap hardens. This is the hardest part!
Step 9: Unmolding and Cutting
Once they’re ready, I carefully remove the soap from the molds. Wow, they look fantastic! Then, I grab my knife or soap cutter and slice them into beautiful bars. I can’t help but admire my handiwork!
Step 10: Curing the Soap
Now that my soap is cut, I place it on the curing rack. It needs to dry for about 4-6 weeks. I know it’ll be worth it once I can use my homemade soap!
Step 11: Enjoy Your Creation!
Finally, after weeks of waiting, I get to use my lovely soap! It smells amazing, and I feel proud knowing I made it from scratch. What a rewarding DIY project!
